Feds announce new policy to limit asylum claims

A group of Central American migrants, representing the thousands participating in a caravan trying to reach the U.S. border, undertake an hours-long march to the office of the United Nations’ humans rights body in Mexico City, Thursday, Nov. 8, 2018. … more>The administration issued a new policy Thursday that would give President Trump power to block asylum claims from the migrant caravan and other illegal immigrants who jump the U.S.-Mexico border.Mr. Trump had telegraphed the move last week, saying he was fed up with migrants exploiting U.S. laws by making bogus claims. The new policy would kick in only after the president issues a proclamation blocking entry of illegal immigrants across the southern border. Once triggered, it would give the government the power to deny asylum claims to illegal immigrants.Migrants who show up at ports of entry demanding asylum would still be permitted. The goal appears to be to try to siphon would-be illegal immigrants to those ports of entry and away from jumping the border.Copyright © 2018 The Washington Times, LLC.
